Lined with dirt roads, multicolored wooden and zinc roofed houses, Las Galeras lies on one of the most beautiful bays in the world, the Bay of Rincon in the Dominican Republic. The beauty has not gone unnoticed by outsiders and a small sex tourism industry is growing in the area. Many local young girls set their sights on marrying themselves off to foreigners who come through the community. In starting a club for girls ages 10 to 15, a goal was to focus the girls’ attentions on other possibilities for their futures. A $499 grant from World Connect’s Kids to Kids Program in 2011 supported a special arts camp, an outgrowth of an existing girls club, that met twice weekly and brought together community artisans and dancers who were willing to donate their time teaching the girls painting, sewing, drama, dance, and cooking, all with a special emphasis on local traditions and all with the hope of inspiring the young girls about their futures and the importance of developing self-reliance, talent and resourcefulness.
