Mchokela School Block Expansion project
Project Launch: 12-3-21
The Tikondane Women Group from Mkwinda Village, Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe District, Central Region of Malawi will lead the construction of a two-classrooms school block aimed at providing a conducive learning environment for over 120 learners at Mchokela Primary School. The school, which caters to 388 male and 327 female students has four classrooms only which has led to overcrowding in the spaces available and abscondment of classes as some students learn under trees. The new classrooms with a sitting capacity of 60 learners in each space, will reduce overcrowding and enable the students to learn in a comfortable environment which can potentially improve their academic performance.
Project Update: 1-6-22
One month after receiving the $9,592.77 World Connect grant, the Tikondane Women group has constructed a two roomed Mchokela Primary School block up to roofing level. The roofing structure is being completed as the group awaits the last phase of the funding to complete the project. The women led group has successfully mobilized cash and in-kind contribution from chiefs and community members who are eager to see 120 children learn in a conducive space. Mr. Moses Andrew Chipala, the school’s headteacher says, “We are thankful to World Connect for the school block project. The school project means the children who are going to standard 5 will be learning right here in their community instead of walking more than 5 kilometres to access education.”
