Tanzania is home to several African natural wonders, including the continent’s highest peak, Kilimanjaro, and Serengeti National Park. However, the country has an alarming rate of hunger and malnutrition, neither of which have appreciably declined in the last five years (UNDP). Tanzania is one of the most food-insecure countries in Southeastern Africa. The majority of Tanzanians live in extreme poverty and one in five young children are malnourished. Overexploitation of the country’s national resources, the prevalence of harmful agricultural practices, lack of access to consumer credit, and climate change threaten to worsen the country’s burdens. Half of the population works in agriculture which provides a quarter of the national GDP and 85% of the country’s exports.
